“Go to the end of John (21:15-17). Why does Jesus ask Peter 3 times “Do you love me?” There’s actually a cultural reason for it.”
Well, many say that Peter denied Christ three times, so Jesus had him confirm his commitment three times. That fits, but there’s more to it than that. In Biblical times, to secure a deal, you stated a thing three times. For example, if you wanted to buy a cow from your neighbor, you’d say in the presence of witnesses, “I’ll buy that cow for 30 shekels. I’ll buy that cow for 30 shekels. I’ll buy that cow for 30 shekels.” The deal was considered done.
Jesus asked Peter three times to make it a done deal.
